Dom Guéranger and the popes

In January 2025, the Holy Father sent a letter to the Abbot of Solesmes to mark the 150th anniversary of Dom Guéranger’s death. But he is not alone! Several popes before him have expressed their attachment and admiration for Dom Guéranger.

Praying to Dom Guéranger

Why ask for the intercession of a Servant of God? Beatification is the solemn act by which the Pope declares that public worship may be accorded to a Servant of God, either by reason of martyrdom, self-sacrifice or heroic practice of the Christian virtues. The person beatified is thus given to all as an example of authentically Christian living. For beatification to take place, there must be at least one miracle authenticated by the Church. The Church therefore invites us to ask for graces through the intercession of those whose beatification process is open.

The monk

Dom Guéranger did a great deal not only to re-found the Order of Saint Benedict in France, whose men’s branch had disappeared following the French Revolution. In doing so, he also had a decisive influence on Benedictine life far beyond the congregation he founded, both in France and abroad.

The liturgist

Dom Guéranger was the initiator of the liturgical movement that followed him, and which has had a major impact on the lives of ordinary Christians right up to the present day..

The theologian

Dom Guéranger is known as the restorer of the Roman liturgy and the male order of Saint Benedict in France. He also played a decisive role worldwide in defining fundamental points of doctrine, such as the dogmas of the Immaculate Conception and papal infallibility.

The life of Dom Guéranger

Dom Guéranger a vécu au XIXème siècle. Il a connu le premier Empire, les deux restaurations, les révolutions de 1830 et 1848, le Second Empire et la République. Témoin privilégié des conflits, remous politiques et sociaux et surtout du renouveau de la foi de son époque, dont il a été un des acteurs décisifs, ses différents biographes nous apprennent beaucoup sur sa confiance en Dieu au milieu des troubles et la façon dont, malgré la difficulté, il a mis sa confiance en Dieu et dans l’Église.

The association

To support the cause of the beatification of Dom Guéranger, an association under the law of 1901 was created in August 2023, whose governance has been entrusted by the Abbot of Solesmes to a team essentially made up of lay people. The association’s task is to promote the life, spirituality and teaching of Dom Louis-Prosper Guéranger (1805 -1875) by disseminating his writings, highlighting his role in the history of monastic life and the universal Church, and promoting his cause of beatification and canonisation.
